FROM THE EAST – THE PILLAR OF WISDOM

Greetings Brethren.

To Brothers Robert Philip, Pericle Georgallis, Roy Ridley & Ron Ridley, congratulations on achieving 50 years in Masonry.  Though your Golden Veterans Ceremony needed a few last-minute adjustments, I hope you all felt your extraordinary achievement was properly acknowledged and celebrated.  Since Brother Pericle was unable to attend, I will endeavor to find a suitable time and place to properly honor him.  To Gini, Sandra, and Dee, thank you for your participation in making the ceremony for your husbands and big brother extra special.

At the end of what was a very long day, on the 15th, I reflected upon how such events can only happen when others give selflessly of their time.  I cannot begin to express the extent of my gratitude to Monica, Tony, Tim, Linda, Sabrina, Robert, Eric, and Dee.  From planning to clean-up, they were instrumental in the event’s success.

Events like these, including our Stated Meeting dinners & monthly breakfasts, take an extraordinary amount of planning and participation.  As such, I would encourage all brothers to consider how they may give of their time, so that others can be blessed by their services.  As I have heard it said, “many hands make light work”.  Thank you in advance for considering how you might be able to serve.

The month of November is when we nominate and elect Lodge officer positions for the 2023 Masonic Year.  You will find the list of prospective nominees in this Trestle Board.  I would encourage all who are interested in having their voices heard, in the selection of our Lodge’s leadership, to attend our November Stated Meeting.  All Capital City Master Masons in good standing, can nominate and vote for whomever they would like.

Fraternally,

Kelly Dixon

FROM THE WEST – THE PILLAR OF STRENGTH

Greetings Brethren.

Happy Fall to everyone!!!! As we move into fall and kick off the Holiday season, and it starts with Halloween.  As usual, every year the Lodge has a Halloween event.  This event is chiefly put together by the wife of our Worshipful Secretary Tony Shelton.  Monica always does such a fantastic job every year, and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank her, THANK YOU MONICA!  I know my boys loved the event, and it was nice to see the kids in our neighborhood all dressed up.

November is a very “Patriotic” month for many.  Not only does this month include Veteran’s Day on November 11th, but also the United States Marine Corp’s Birthday on November 10th.  I share these important days in my family, since my own birthday is on November 10th and my great grandfather who was on the 11th.  I always remember, and thank our armed forces for the sacrifice they gave to our wonderful country.  Without them, we would “NOT” have the freedoms we have today.  I challenge you, for a day, to introduce yourself and shake the hand of every veteran you come across.  I know I will.  I am very proud of every Armed Forces service member that I personally know, and whom I call family, friend or brother.

I would like to congratulate our brothers Roy Ridley, Ron Ridley, Robert Philip and Pericle Georgallis.  This last month, they all achieved 50 years in Masonry, and were honored with a Golden Veteran’s Award.  I count it an Honor to not only be present, but to be the Marshal for the Golden Veteran’s Ceremony this past month.  And, I am also thankful to Worshipful Tony Shelton and Brother Tim Scott, for the wonderful meal they prepared that afternoon.  It was very much enjoyed.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving this year, and has time to spend with family & friends.  As always, we have a few gentlemen interested in joining our great institution.  Hopefully, in the near future, we will be back to doing some degrees. I hope to see you all during the Stated Meeting.

FROM THE SOUTH – THE PILLAR OF BEAUTY

Greetings from the South brethren.

We have two more months before the end of this year, how time indeed waits for no man.  We have witnessed how our Lodge rallied the brethren throughout this year, by engaging in various activities that hope to cater to everyone’s needs and interest.  We can only look forward from here.

For this month’s article, I would like to continue to contribute some masonic trivia and education.

Why is the North Dark?

Did you know that on the north side of the Garden of Eden, there is a sea of water and darkness?  The abode of Satan. So, when God made Adam & Eve go out of the garden, he did not place them on the border northward.

King Solomon’s Temple was built with the north side, being dark as well. Thus, in the olden days, churches & graveyards were located in one place.  They did not bury people on the north side.  The allusion that the north is a place of darkness, can be traced back to the very early Masonic rituals.  Perhaps, this dread of the north was related to the natural inclemency which threatened him from the north, where the winds brought the cold from the Arctic regions.

There is another, perhaps more practical reason for the north to be considered a place of darkness.  Early religious buildings were built in an east-west fashion, with the east being the predominant direction.  This orientation was desired as the east was considered the source of light & power, related to the sun rising in the east.  In creating their work area, the medieval Lodge built a lean-to type building, erected alongside the church under construction. This building was invariably placed on the southern side of the construction, to avoid the inclemency of the cold northern winds.  As a result, the Lodge acquired an east to west orientation, and the openings were in the east, south, and west.  This exposed the hut or lodge & the workmen to as much east, south, and west light as possible. This provided the necessary light to work by, for as long as possible.  The light was blocked from the north by the adjacent building.

As Masonry moved from the operative to the speculative, it was natural that the north would continue to symbolically represent the darkness of the working structures.  As such, the north represents the profane world and symbolizes ignorance, as study and examination are not possible in darkness.  So, it is fitting that this symbol is presented to the “Entered Apprentice” during his initiation.  In this act, the candidate enters a new stage of his life.  He is dedicated to improving himself morally, and to seek a better understanding of his relationship with the Creator.  As such, he seeks enlightenment, leaving behind the darkness of ignorance.

As Masons, we should remember our continued quest for self-development and personal growth.  Above all, we must always remember that a Mason is not necessarily or not only a member of a Lodge.  In a broad sense, he is any person who tries daily to live the masonic life and to intelligently serve the needs of the Great Architect.

Eduardo Caballero Jr., PM

FROM THE EAST – THE PILLAR OF WISDOM

Greetings Brethren.

As my year of sitting in the East moves into the month of August, many Lodge-related issues occupy my thoughts.  From maintaining harmony, to keeping a watchful eye out for unscrupulous individuals, to using email phishing scams to steal from our membership.  For the record, I don’t use email to solicit help buying gift cards.  It is an old scam that never seems to die, it simply changes its form and approach.

Between the spectrum of the issues described above, I continually look for new and innovative ways to create opportunities for greater service to, and engagement with our membership.

For a number of reasons, many of our brothers do not participate in Lodge.  I know that some of our brothers have moved away, while others have transportation challenges.  In trying to address these issues, I would be interested to hearing from our membership about their ideas in improving the Lodge experience.  Ideas which the current or past, Pillars of the Lodge may not have considered.

For example:

Would it make a difference for those with transportation concerns, if we could arrange for a ride from a brother or Uber?

or

If we could arrange for remote participation via an online platform such as Zoom, would you login?

Please reach out to me via email, with your ideas and thoughts regarding these and any other matters you might like to have addresses.  You just might have the solution keys to one or more of the challenges facing our Lodge.

Fraternally,

Kelly Dixon

FROM THE WEST – THE PILLAR OF STRENGTH

Greetings Brethren.

From the West, as we continue to move into the hotter days of Summer, let us not forget about these fun times spent with our Family and Friends.

I would like to share my family experiences this summer with you.  Because my oldest son is out for the Summer, my family and I are doing more vacations and activities closer together.  As he transitions into General Ed Kindergarten, we will be in more of a structured environment next year.  This first week in August, I will be missing the Stated Meeting, and taking my family back to Disneyland again.  I share this because Summer has always been a time for the Lodge “to go dark”, and most brothers do a lot of traveling.  I look forward to hearing about everyone’s vacations, perhaps at the next Lodge breakfast.

Lodge breakfast will be held on the first Saturday of this Month on August 6th, 2022, at the same time of 8:00 am to 10:00 am.  Worshipful Dixon has kindly accepted the responsibility to head our breakfast, as I will be out of town.  Brothers, as always, help is wanted and needed to make the monthly breakfast a success.  Please reach out to Worshipful Dixon or myself if you’re interested in helping out.  Friends and family that are interested in joining Lodge, please bring them down to meet the brothers and their families.

Hope to see you all there!

FROM THE SOUTH – THE PILLAR OF BEAUTY

Greetings from the South Brethren!

We are in the month of August, and the weather is getting hotter and hotter.  Plus, we expect more triple-digit temperatures to come.  I would advise everyone to stay indoors, and keep yourself cool & well hydrated.  Hopefully, this warm weather will also warm up our spirits, and bring out our burning desires to get involved in Lodge activities.

Speaking of which, our Stated Meeting for the month of August is also fast approaching.  Dinner will include Spaghetti & Meatballs, Garlic Bread, a Garden Salad and Cheese Cake for dessert.

For this month’s article, I will continue with some masonic education, as well as talk about charity – see below:

Charity Begins at Home

Charity begins at home, is the voice of the world: yet is every man his greatest enemy”. This expression was first put into print that we now use Religio Medici in 1642 by Sir Thomas Browne. There was also an earlier claim in 1383 by John Wycliffe, who wrote “Charity should begin at himself”. Many people have different interpretations on what charity could mean. One might argue that this means taking care of your own family first, before taking care of other people outside your family, while the other might argue, you teach your children the value of charity at home so they in turn can take care of other people besides themselves. It might seem to take on the same result, but the approach is entirely different. The first statement assumes that the family needed charity so it should start at home, while the other statement also assumes the children needed to learn charity at home before they can be charitable outside of the home. Although the original text “charity begins at home” is not from the Bible, there is a close reference to this concept that came from 1 Timothy 5:4 where Paul (one of the disciples) tells Timothy (also one of the disciples) “to make sure the widows are taken care of by their own families first, before calling on the church.”

So, are we charitable? Is freemasonry a charitable organization? Faith, Hope and Charity, and the greatest of this is Charity. What does charity mean for us?  In our quest to make ourselves a better person, we make certain sacrifices to put others before our own needs.  To put our family’s needs before our own, then our neighbor, our community and our country.  To those who came before us and found enlightenment, sought and captured the bigger picture, the authors of the constitution, the fallen heroes in the battlefield, they all made the biggest sacrifices and delivered some of the greatest acts of charity.  But, so did the fathers who took care of their wives and children every single day for the rest of their mortal life.  Charity is an unselfish act to take care of others before yourself, no matter how big or small the act is.

Touching on the technical side of this concept, I would like to clarify that freemasonry is charitable and advocates charity, but a masonic lodge is not a charitable organization. A lodge may create a charitable foundation for a specific purpose of charitable work, yet a lodge alone cannot take credit of being a charitable organization.

As masons, we sometimes become the voice of those who kept quiet for a long time.  Those who lost their voice to speak because they are tamed by the barbarous and brute force of poverty, constantly knocking on their doors. As masons, we sometimes open doors for the world to see that what is beautiful in the outside, might be masking the destruction and the suffering in the inside. As masons, sometimes we have to throw the first stone in order to create a ripple. As masons, most of the time we must travel the rough and rugged road in order to appreciate the beauty of the landscape of our journey.
