FROM THE EAST – THE PILLAR OF WISDOM

Brethren,

Finally!!!!  The season of good weather is upon us.  This year certainly has been “one for the record books”, as they say.  The same can be said with our Lodge.

Each month of this year, we have had great success in our events, such as our Stated Meeting Dinners and monthly Lodge Breakfasts.  At almost every recent event, we have met a potential new member of our Lodge, as well as members who may not come around as often.  In doing so, we have lined up a few potential applicants.  With the assistance of our newly obligated brother Chris Love, we are keeping great track of these gentlemen.  Hopefully soon, they will ask “the question”, and turn in an application. Brothers, I encourage you further to come to our Stated Meetings and the monthly Lodge Breakfasts, because these are the times to socialize and meet members you haven’t, as well as new potential members.

In May, we are looking to have a Campfire Social Event at the Lodge, on Friday May 12th at 7:00 pm.  This event is purely social, so please bring a beverage to share and/or snack if you would like.  We plan to have a short presentation for you, put on by Brothers Chris Love and Daniel Marrujo.  There will also be a fire outside in the courtyard, with tiki torches.  This will be a great time to kick back and enjoy a simple, informal, social evening among brothers.  Hope to see you all there!

Next, and most importantly this month, we are having our Roll Call Dinner on May 20th, to honor our fallen brothers this last year.  Social starts at 2:00 pm, and dinner will be served at 3:00 pm.  Please RSVP to the Worshipful Master, by our Stated Meeting on May 3rd.  We are planning a fantastic meal, and need to have an accurate head count.  If you plan to attend, and bring your spouse, please let us know.  Brother Tim Scott will be our Head Chef for the evening.

Thank you to all the brothers who came out and enjoyed our 2nd Degree for Brother Bryan Lincoln.  It was an evening of great Ritual.  I’m very proud of our Lodge, especially since it has been a few years since we put on a 2nd Degree.  It was also nice to see our Inspector John Knox, who was in attendance for our degree. Worshipful Knox is making progress with his health, and we are just so glad to see him out and about.

See you all in Lodge.

Fraternally,

Robert W. Leach

FROM THE WEST – THE PILLAR OF STRENGTH

Greetings Brethren.

By now, you should have received the Master’s Summons to attend our 2023 Roll Call Dinner.  It is our annual event in which we honor our brothers who have laid down their working tools.  Please set aside some time to attend this event, and join the Master as we pay tribute to those who have gone before us.

As we continue to look for opportunities to fellowship outside of our monthly stated meetings, the Master has tasked me with organizing a Lodge camping trip.  The goal of this initial trip, is to find a suitable location not far from Sacramento, so that we can assess interest in such events.

After doing some research on facilities with accommodations for those who like to Glamp, tent camp, or drive and/or pull their house on wheels, I believed the Inn Town Campground in Nevada City has the best facilities, at reasonable prices, for such an event.  Check out their website at https://inntowncampground.com.  I’m looking for an August or September time frame for such an event, and if you we like to participate, please reach out to me at my email address listed below.

Finally, I would like to take the opportunity to thank all who have participated this year in putting together our Stated Meeting Dinners.  In addition to Kevin Laybourn stepping up last month, Tony Shelton, Tim Scott, Robert Leach and Jim Lloyd have also served the Lodge in this manner.  Though I may have missed mentioning others who deserve credit, please know that Robert and I are grateful for your service to the Lodge members and their families.

Fraternally,

Kelly Dixon, PM

FROM THE SECRETARY’S DESK

Hello Brethren,

So, this is all you need to know on the Grand Lodge of California:

The Grand Lodge of California was established in the year1850, here in Sacramento.  This was just a few months before California became a state.  As history shows us, Sutter’s Fort was established in 1839, and called New Helvetia (or new Switzerland).  It was quickly established as a Mining Supply, Agricultural and Trade Colony.  Miners began to arrive on their quest for gold, and several carried military-issued charters.  This was for Masonic meetings to be held in the field.

Shortly after arriving at Sutter’s Fort, some decided to stay, and then built Masonic Lodges in Sacramento.  After a time, the Grand Lodge of California was relocated for a while, to sleepy river town of Courtland.  Now, it resides at 1111 California Street in San Francisco, California.

Interesting to note, that when the Lodge in Courtland closed, a deal was made with a buyer to have the ornate stained glass removed and sent to San Francisco.   Here, it was installed within our Grand Lodge in San Francisco.  A reminder of our rich past and devotion to move forward in life, with the pursuit of history of Freemasonry in California.

Respectfully Submitted,

Tony L. Shelton, PM

Secretary

FROM THE EAST – THE PILLAR OF WISDOM

Brethren,

Well, we had a fairly busy start to the new masonic year in February.  It was a very successful first Saturday Breakfast, followed by our annual Sweethearts and Ladies Luncheon.  The ladies left the luncheon with a wonderful Capital City Lodge gift of an engraved sweetheart’s glass and some chocolates.

During the day, we learned a lot about the Masonic Homes from a presentation by a Masonic Homes representative.  We received information about the great benefits that each Mason has access to, by just being a part of this great fraternity.  My brothers, it is so important that each Mason knows about these benefits, as well as a great resource at www.masonichome.org.  Here they will explain all the benefits and resources available.

Next, the Super Bowl Party this year was a big hit.  We had a great crowd, with members from other lodges in our very own district, which included Harding San Juan & Rio Linda.  I’m hoping brothers, that as we continue this event, it may grow into more of a district event.  It was also amazing to try the variety of different foods and snacks, that we all got to share.  Even the beverages were good too.

The Month of March is our Youth Order observance, and we plan to help sponsor a Prospect Party for our Local Job’s Daughter’s Bethel number 291.  These girls have worked so hard, and like all youth orders, are struggling with membership.  Please reach out if you know of any young girls or ladies, who you think would benefit from membership in Job’s daughters.  Once again brethren, please remember the Masonic youth orders.  Job’s Daughter, DeMolay and Rainbow for Girls are our future in Masonry.  I am not sure yet on the date in March, but the officers of the Lodge will be helping them make this a success.

Last, but certainly not least, the Lodge was very fortunate to have a successful double First Degree in the Month of February.  I would like to welcome Brothers Chris Love and Daniel Marrujo to our fraternity.  I would also like to extend a thank you to the brothers from Harding-San Juan & Rio Linda Lodges for helping us out.  We really appreciate their efforts, and Brother’s Love and Marrujo bring an excitement to masonry that has been unseen in a long time.

I would like to end by encouraging everyone to try and make the March Stated Meeting.  Not only to meet the new brothers, but also because we are having “Corned Beef and Cabbage” for dinner!

Fraternally,

Robert W. Leach

Master  Rwleach@gmail.com

FROM THE WEST – THE PILLAR OF STRENGTH

Greetings Brethren.

Let me first welcome Brothers Chris Love and Dan Marrujo, to the fraternity.  Capital City Lodge is certainly a better place with the two of them as members.  I was honored to be a part of their initiation, and look forward to being a apart of their Masonic journey.

In addition to the double first degree, the Lodge had our Sweethearts and Ladies Luncheon, a monthly breakfast, and a Superbowl party all in the month of February.  To everyone who help put on these events, thank you for your assistance.  A special thanks goes out to Brother Tony Shelton for arranging a Masonic Services Bureau presentation, at the Sweethearts and Ladies Luncheon.

I’m looking forward to our March Stated Meeting meal of corned beef and cabbage.  I think the version I prepared last year fell a little short of the mark, and I’m sure this year’s version will be something to savor.  Also in the month of March, we will be having a Second-Degree Ceremony, passing Brother Bryan Lincoln to the degree of Fellowcraft.

Finally, we will be participating with our Job’s Daughter’s Bethel, as they put on a prospect party.  When the date is finalized, Worshipful Leach will put out the information.  So, when the date is identified, and if it meets with some of your free time, please consider helping support Job’s Daughters in their endeavors to increase membership.

Fraternally,

Kelly Dixon, PM

FROM THE SECRETARY’S DESK

Greetings Brethren.

It is now March, and we have a traditional observance from Ireland.

Did you know that in London,

a Lodge was meeting holding their meeting in a Library.  Part of this Library was under repair, and a young girl named Elizabeth St. Leger was currently napping there.

She was suddenly awakened, after hearing voices behind the wall.  Upon removing two bricks, she was able to view some men doing a ritual, and was able to observe a ceremony taking place from behind the wall.

A sudden noise from without the room, alarmed the Tyler of the Lodge.  When he went to investigate it, he found a young girl.  But it just so happens, that he is the butler of her home.  Among the men who came out to see about the alarm was her father, and he was also a mason of this Lodge.

Since she under stood the solemnity of this event, it was agreed by all the men present, to make her a mason. It is also believed that she was initiated sometime between 1710 and 1718.  Elizabeth was married in 1713, and continued to attend Lodge with her husband.  She lived from 1693 until 1773, when she finally passed away.  Elizabeth was never the Master of the Lodge, but was an active member until she passed away.  To date, her picture still hangs in the Lodges of Ireland, with the caption below reading “The First Lady of Masonry”.

And now, you know the rest of the story!

Fraternally,

Tony L. Shelton, PM

Secretary
