FROM THE EAST – THE PILLAR OF WISDOM

Greetings from the East and welcome to November.

Hail Brethren!  Its election time for not only federal, state and local governments, but for our Lodge as well.  November 4th at 7:00 pm, (our normal meeting night), we will have a “Zoom” meeting for the election of officers and other business.  Following several guide lines, this is how your officers and I are going to proceed:

  • The meeting will start at 7:00 pm.
  • Shortly thereafter, I will ask everybody to identify themselves for the roll.
  • We will then go directly into the business meeting, without the normal Masonic opening.
  • I will be asking for a financial report, so we know where we are money wise.

NOTE:  If any of you want a report on the Grand Lodge legislation, please let me know ahead of time so I can present it.  Otherwise, it is available on the Grand Lodge web site at Masons of California.org.

  • Once this business is completed, we will go into the election of officers, (if enough of us join the meeting).  Then we will set our elected officer’s core for next year.  I am still waiting for info on how we are going to install our officers.
  • After the election of officers is complete, I will ask our own Hiram Abif (Kelly Dixon) for a report on the status of our hall renovation projects.
  • At this time, I will open the floor for discussion.

I hope to see or hear from you on November 4th at 7:00 pm.

Happy Thanksgiving,

Matthew Ernst, P.M.

Master, (916) 995-0629, mernst@winfirst.com

FROM THE WEST – THE PILLAR OF STRENGTH

Greetings Brethren from the West.

I know it is hard to believe, but another year has passed and it is now time for our elections of officers.  Yes, another first, since we are now having a “Zoom” Stated Meeting along with the election of officers.  If you wish to participate and are not familiar with Zoom meetings, then you can contact brother Kevin Laybourn at kevin.laybourn@gmail.com for further instruction.

The worshipful master Matthew Ernst may have further communications on this matter, so make sure you all check your e-mails.

It has been a very nice fall so far.  The temps are falling, so hopefully

the California Fire Season will be ending soon.

We are all looking toward moving forward in 2021, especially since it will be our Lodge’s 100th anniversary as a charter Masonic Lodge.  Let’s hope in 2021 we can get back to something like our normal operation, and once again be able to assist all people within our means.

Thank you in advance for your continued help in all of these 2020

Matters.

Fraternally Yours,

Tony L. Shelton, PM

Senior Warden, (916) 240-0709 Nautilas2010@yahoo.com

FROM THE SOUTH – THE PILLAR OF BEAUTY

Greetings from the South.

On Tuesday, November 3rd, election day will be upon us.  It is the day, the Tuesday after the first Monday in November, set aside by Congress in 1845 to elect the person who will lead our Nation for the next four years.

On Wednesday, November 4th, we will be meeting to select our Lodge’s leaders for our 100thyear anniversary in 2021.  I’m guessing we could all agree that these events will be remembered for their unprecedented animus and circumstances.  For those with a discerning eye, regardless of one’s political position, this national election season has produced a division within our Country which has divided families and fractured friendships.  As for our stated meeting, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, who could have imagined we would be selecting our leaders in a virtual stated meeting and not in a tiled Lodge room.

As we individually prepare for any emotional or technological challenges which may arise during these leadership selection processes, I would like to suggest that you consider the following passage of prayer which might help us keep these matters in their proper perspective.

“Great Architect of the Universe!…………Grant that the sublime principles of Freemasonry may so subdue ever discordant passion within us – so harmonize and enrich our hearts with thine own love and goodness – that the Lodge at this time may humbly reflect that order and beauty which reign forever before thy throne.  Amen”

Fraternally,

Kelly Dixon

FROM THE EAST – THE PILLAR OF WISDOM

Greetings from the East.

Welcome Brothers and Sisters to fall.  Even with all that’s happening with COVID-19, the summer has flown by and now we have Halloween fast approaching.  The Lodge is still dark along with many other things, and the annual communication is still happening via zoom.  If you wish to participate, you can register on-line at the Grand Lodge web site.  You will need your dues card, since it has your member number on it.

To be very honest, other than the annual communication, not much is happening for the Lodge at this time.  Your executive team and I are still waiting to hear from our inspector and A.G.L., as to how the Lodges are going to proceed with the elections and installations. The last I spoke with Worshipful Knox, he was unsure as to what direction was being taken.  I can tell you however, that the bills are being paid for both the Lodge and the Hall Board.

I do my best to not be political in my articles, but I would encourage all of you to study your ballots and vote anyway you see fit.  It was one and still is one of the most important freedoms and privileges that we have been given.  There is a proposition on the ballot “Prop 15” which could adversely affect the Lodge.

That’s all I have for now.  Be safe, and if you are having difficulties and the Lodge can help, please don’t hesitate to call any of the officers for assistance.

May the blessing of heaven be upon us all.

Fraternally,

Matthew Ernst, P.M.

FROM THE WEST – THE PILLAR OF STRENGTH

Greetings Brethren from the West.

As worshipful Matt has stated, Fall is here and yet it still feels like Summer.  October would have your officers still practicing their parts in preparation for the upcoming elections.  This is true, for we are all diligently working with the inspector to take on our advanced stations within the Lodge line.

Please remember that no matter how many times we have served, we all still need to qualify in order to advance, COVID-19 or no COVID-19.  These duties have not been suspended at this time.

Brother Kelly Dixon has the Lodge projects moving forward, so we can be ready to reopen the Lodge when permitted.

Be of good cheer my brethren, and we will all get back together as soon as possible.

Respectfully submitted,

Tony L. Shelton, PM

FROM THE SOUTH – THE PILLAR OF BEAUTY

Greetings from the South.

Brothers, I send you greetings from the Black Hills of South Dakota. As I contemplated the topic of my article for this month, I could not help but to reflect upon the monument at Mount Rushmore that Sabrena and I visited.

Each of the men honored by this monument, two of whom were Masons, had qualities and characteristics that are to be admired.  George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln.  They were men who I’m sure, had all the same shortcomings associated with being a member of the Human Race.  They served their country with zeal and sacrifice. It does not matter if we agreed or disagreed with the ideologies, religious views or politics. What matters is that they served, and committed a large portion of their lives fighting for what they believed in.

As a result of their service, you and I today live in a free country. It is my concerted opinion that we can honor the service and sacrifice of the aforementioned men by participating in the selection of our leaders, and the establishment of laws which govern us.  On November 3, 2020, please exercise your rights and freedoms by voting. Whom or what you vote for or against, is a private and personal matter.  Yet by voting, we can participate in shaping the direction our country moves in, and ensure that the liberties and freedoms established by our country’s forebearers are secured for the generations of Americans who will come after us.

Fraternally,

Kelly Dixon

FROM THE EAST – THE PILLAR OF WISDOM

Greetings from the East.

Welcome to September.  This is the month that the Lodge comes out of its summer slumber, and resumes work.  But due to our current situation, we find ourselves at an impasse that brings me to my topic this month.  The Grand Master has sent out a letter via email, which I have included in this Trestle Board for your reference – see insert.

As of this writing, I have also spoken with our inspector Worshipful John Knox, asking that he will be involved with the rest of the districts to discuss how the election of officers and installation of officers will take place this year.

For now, the Lodge is still moving forward with the renovations.  Be safe my brethren, and lookout for one another.  May the blessing be upon us all.

Matthew Ernst, P.M.

FROM THE WEST – THE PILLAR OF STRENGTH

Greetings Brethren from the West.

As our Master and Grand Master have stated, our masonic family is constantly evolving to endure all challenges being presented in our world at this time.  Remember my brethren that masonry teaches us to unite with men all around the world, from every country, sect. or province.  It is also up to us to treat all men equally within our community.

As we deal with this pandemic, unrest and protests within our communities, as well as catastrophic events of fires and hurricanes, remember our teachings of brotherly love, relief and truth when dealing with these matters.  Also remember my brethren, that you are never alone in these times.  You are just a text, email or phone call away from help.  This can relieve you of your troubled mind by just touching basis with a brother and having a conversation.

Paying the craft, I would like to thank all the brethren who showed up on Saturday the 28th for the Covid-19 work party.  We made a big push by assisting brother Kelly Dixon in moving toward the next stage of our Lodge remodel.

Please be safe my brethren, until such a time comes when we can meet together again.

Fraternally,

Tony L. Shelton, PM

FROM THE SOUTH – THE PILLAR OF BEAUTY

Greetings from the South.

The month of September brings with it the beginning of some much needed renovations in the Lodge room. We will be re-carpeting and painting, installing new side liner seating and getting a new sound/PA system.  I would like to thank all those who took some time on the 29th to get the lodge room ready to be worked on.

As I have contemplated the changes we have made over the last year, I began to search the internet for information about our Lodge.  While there are a variety of recent events about the Lodge that can be found on the Internet, I did come across a photo that seemed to be relevant to our upcoming 100-year anniversary.  I hope you enjoy this small bit of our lodge’s history.

On August 20, 1971, the Sacramento Bee published the following caption and photograph.  “Capitol City Masonic Temple Lodge #499 dedication ceremonies.  Grand Marshall DeWald M. Baum is directed by the Grand Master Herbert A. Huebner to place a bronze plaque in place.

FROM THE EAST – THE PILLAR OF WISDOM

Greetings from the East.

Welcome to August.  As most of you may know, the northern part of our state is once again plagued by wild fires.  Most Worshipful John E. Trauner, Grand Master has stated that there will not be any masonic gatherings until further notice. With that being said, it is all the more reason that the Trestle Board be published each month.  This how we can all stay connected, and know that the executive committee is still working for the Lodge.

Some things are getting back to normal, like NASCAR running races and Major League Baseball starting back up this season with a limited schedule.  Also, some eateries are serving customers on the sidewalks.  I do see some good things coming out of this “NEW” normal.  But as a whole, we as a fraternity need to remember our obligations and check-in with our brothers.

The Lodge renovation is coming down to its final stages.  I will, through our social media sites, keep you informed of any upcoming work parties.   We will be using safe practices, and follow all CDC guide lines when asking for assistance.  Please all of you stay safe, love your families and have a great August.

May the blessings of heaven rest upon us all.

Fraternally,

Matthew Ernst, P.M.

FROM THE WEST – THE PILLAR OF STRENGTH

Greetings Brethren from the West.

Welcome to “Hot August Nights”.  As we are still under lockdown per our Grand Lodge, we are all quite anxious to once again be able to assemble together.

Your Lodge officers are preparing for next year, and making plans for what should be a great “100 Year Anniversary”.  Prayers are in order, in hopes of finding a vaccine for the Corona Virus, so that we can hopefully get back to normal.

As worshipful Matt stated, now is a good time to reach out with some type of communication to our brethren.  Let them know you are thinking of them.

Fraternally,

Tony L. Shelton, PM

FROM THE SOUTH – THE PILLAR OF BEAUTY

Greetings from the South.

While considering my article for the month of August, the words Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth have crossed my mind.  Deciding to focus on brother love, I searched the internet for a few articles on the topic and came across one published in “The Masonic Scholar: A Manual of Masonic Education for Candidates.”  It discusses how Love is the highest valuation that can be placed on another human being.  Among other things, it’s about loyalty, sacrifice, and appreciation, and should be given freely to others.  It should never involve concerns about any advantages one may gain for expressing Love.

What then, is brotherly love?  Some define brotherly love as “feelings of humanity and compassion toward one’s fellow humans,” a noun.  As Masons, I believe we should define it as a verb, a proactive effort, whereby one man’s actions clearly indicate that they place another human being in the highest possible valuation as a friend, companion, associate, or neighbor.

I would encourage each of us, especially during these trying times, to self-reflect about our commitment to the craft, our brothers, mankind, and our obligation.  Are we proactively engaging in acts of brotherly love?  Are we making a difference in the lives of others?  An attentive ear, kind word, or helping hand might just be what our mothers, fathers, wives, significant others, children, friends and neighbors needed to get them through a difficult day.

Fraternally,

Kelly Dixon

FROM THE EAST – THE PILLAR OF WISDOM

Greetings from the East Brethren, and Happy Easter.

As of this morning, I have been told to shelter in place and respond to work when called.  The Grand Master has ordered all Masonic functions to be canceled for at least the month of April.  So, at this time I have no calendar to post.  I wish you all the best, and rest assured that the bills are being paid.  Also, please follow all the posted hygiene rules, like washing your hands like you have been peeling peppers.  If you need help, please call me or any members of the Lodge.  We will do our level best to get help to you.

FROM THE WEST – THE PILLAR OF STRENGTH

Greetings from the West Brethren, and Happy Easter.

Well, if you don’t know yet, the Grand Lodge has suspended all functions for the month of April 2020.  Some good news, the Lodge remodel is moving forward and the lady’s restroom is going to be much improved.  Thanks to the time we have been given, we are able to focus on the remodel.  The great news is that most political ads

seem to have settled down.  Thank you “Covid-19” for that.

Hopefully, you are all doing fine, and weathering this virus.  Good health wishes to all brethren and their families, and please stay self-isolated whenever possible.

If you do need help in these trying times, please call one of us, and we will do whatever we can to assist you.

FROM THE SOUTH – THE PILLAR OF BEAUTY

Greetings from the South.

Though it seems we are not likely to be together again, at least until the month of May.  I look forward to that time when we can share fellowship together, over a meal and good conversation.  While our building will be vacant during the month of April, we will be taking advantage of the situation by increasing our renovation schedule.  Then if all goes well, both restrooms will be renovated and ready for service for the May Stated Meeting.

To all, I wish good health and prosperity, in these trying times.  If I can be of assistance, please feel free to contact me.
