FROM THE EAST – THE PILLAR OF WISDOM

Brethren,

I would like to extend a heartfelt “thank you”, to all the brothers that signed my card while I was hospitalized during our May Stated Meeting.  I am very thankful to have such a great core of officers, willing to step up and step in to help out. Thank you, Worshipful Dixon, for filling the East again this month.

I’m certain the food you all had, was better than my clear liquid diet, LOL.  Thank you to Brother Tim, and all who helped out in the Kitchen.  I heard the food was absolutely amazing.

We were supposed to have our “Official Visit” in May, but that has now been changed to June in light of recent events.  The June Stated Meeting brothers will now be our “Official Visit” with the Inspector Scott Morrison, who is still filling in for Worshipful John Knox.

This last month in May, the Lodge held a Campfire Social.  It was a little different approach, to what we have done in the past.  It was a very successful event, my brothers.  We had 6 gentlemen interested in the craft, who attended this event.  It was filled with a time of great conversation, laughs, good drinks and snacks were had by all.  We talked about Masonry, and helped answer any questions they may have.  I believe that in June, we will find in a few applications read in Lodge.  I would like to once again encourage all of you to please attend Lodge events, and to come meet these new gentlemen as well as your brothers. The officers of Capital City are working very hard to grow our little corner of Masonry.

On 6/16/23 at 7:00 pm, we plan to have another social event. It will be a Game/Card Night, so please bring a snack or beverage to share, as we have a casual get together for fellowship.

In July, we will be skipping our Monthly Lodge Breakfast, in- leu of the Holiday weekend for the 4th of July.  Instead, we are having a Lodge Family BBQ on 7/29/23.  Social will start at 1:00 pm, and dinner is at 3:00pm.  The Lodge will provide hamburgers & hot dogs, and we ask that everyone bring a side dish to share.  We will also have yard games, inflatable jump house, movies going for entertainment and who knows what else.

Later on in August, the Lodge will have a camping trip for all those interested.  Please see Worshipful Dixon’s article in this month’s Trestle Board for further details.

Great things are happening this summer brothers, and I hope that each and every one of you are able to take part in the festivities.  Please reach out to your Worshipful Master and officers, if you have any questions or concerns.

See you all in Lodge.

Fraternally,

Robert W. Leach

FROM THE WEST – THE PILLAR OF STRENGTH

Greetings Brethren.

To all who answered the Master’s Summons and attended our annual Roll Call Dinner, thank you for setting aside some time to attend this solemn event.  As I’m sure the Master is, I’m also grateful for all who selflessly gave of their time to put this event together.  Food shopping began Thursday, setup occurred Friday night, the Kitchen Crew began food preparation on Saturday at 8 am, and the Lodge was secured at about 7 pm after cleanup was completed.  These events do not occur without the support of others, and for that, I am grateful.

We will be having our first Lodge camping trip in August.  Check in will be Friday, August 18th, and checkout will be Sunday, August 20th.  The Inn Town Campground is in Nevada City, and has amenities for all campers.  I have camped at this facility on a number of occasions, and I believe it will be a good place to enjoy the company of our family members away from the Lodge.  If you like to attend, you can check out the campground offerings, and make reservations at https://inntowncampground.com.

For those who haven’t had a chance to come to Lodge lately, we finally completed a project that properly honors the Past Masters of Capital City Lodge.  Past Master photos that were once on display in small frames in the dining hall, have all been digitally scanned.  We were able to fill in gaps where Past Master information and/or photographs were missing, and put together an easy-to-see multimedia display.  It is now located in the Lodge foyer, for our members, families, guests and renters to enjoy.  The following is an example presentation slide:

We are missing photographs for three Past Masters, Richard Terk-1983, Robert Tice-1993, and Robert Reavis-1996.  If any brother has any photographs of these individuals or information on whom we might contact to obtain them, please reach out to me so that we can add them to the display.  In the meantime, I will be working with Brother Ron Ridley on a similar project which properly honors the Past Masters of Golden Empire Lodge.

Kelly Dixon, PM

FROM THE SECRETARY’S DESK

Brethren, how about a brush up on our flag, the “Symbol of America”.  Do you know that when the first flag was adopted to represent the American colonies?  I found this information fascinating to research, and I hope it was at least information you may not have known.

In 1776, the first flag was constructed as the Continental Army Flag, by General George Washington.  It consisted of 13 red and white stripes, but in the field where we now have stars, a British Union Jack was placed.  Several 13 stripe flags were used in 1776 & 1777, all individual to the original colonies.

On June 14th 1777, Congress designed the flag with alternating red and white stripes.  In the upper left corner was a blue background of 13 stars with 6-points, for the original 13 colonies.  This design was conceived by Francis Hopkins, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.

In 1777, the State Navy Board of Pennsylvania Commissioned Betsy Ross to sew flags for Naval Vessels. To speed up the process, the stars were changed from 6-points to 5-points.

In 1795, when Vermont and Kentucky became states, and new stars were added.  This inspired Francis Scott Key to write about the star-spangled banner, composed in 1818.

In 1818, Congress decided not to add more stripes for the new states, but rather add a new star for each new state.  At that time, there were 20 stars on the flag.

In 1861, the Stars and Stripes flew for the first time, in a Flag Day celebration in Hartford Connecticut.  It was the first summer of the Civil War.

In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed a nation-wide observance of Flag Day.  This practice however, was not adopted until 1949, when Congress voted to declare that Flag Day is to be a “Permanent Holiday”.

After the 49th and 50th stars were added to the flag, the regulated design now stands with seven red stripes & 6 white stripes which alternate with the red on top and bottom of the flag.

FROM THE EAST – THE PILLAR OF WISDOM

Brethren,

Finally!!!!  The season of good weather is upon us.  This year certainly has been “one for the record books”, as they say.  The same can be said with our Lodge.

Each month of this year, we have had great success in our events, such as our Stated Meeting Dinners and monthly Lodge Breakfasts.  At almost every recent event, we have met a potential new member of our Lodge, as well as members who may not come around as often.  In doing so, we have lined up a few potential applicants.  With the assistance of our newly obligated brother Chris Love, we are keeping great track of these gentlemen.  Hopefully soon, they will ask “the question”, and turn in an application. Brothers, I encourage you further to come to our Stated Meetings and the monthly Lodge Breakfasts, because these are the times to socialize and meet members you haven’t, as well as new potential members.

In May, we are looking to have a Campfire Social Event at the Lodge, on Friday May 12th at 7:00 pm.  This event is purely social, so please bring a beverage to share and/or snack if you would like.  We plan to have a short presentation for you, put on by Brothers Chris Love and Daniel Marrujo.  There will also be a fire outside in the courtyard, with tiki torches.  This will be a great time to kick back and enjoy a simple, informal, social evening among brothers.  Hope to see you all there!

Next, and most importantly this month, we are having our Roll Call Dinner on May 20th, to honor our fallen brothers this last year.  Social starts at 2:00 pm, and dinner will be served at 3:00 pm.  Please RSVP to the Worshipful Master, by our Stated Meeting on May 3rd.  We are planning a fantastic meal, and need to have an accurate head count.  If you plan to attend, and bring your spouse, please let us know.  Brother Tim Scott will be our Head Chef for the evening.

Thank you to all the brothers who came out and enjoyed our 2nd Degree for Brother Bryan Lincoln.  It was an evening of great Ritual.  I’m very proud of our Lodge, especially since it has been a few years since we put on a 2nd Degree.  It was also nice to see our Inspector John Knox, who was in attendance for our degree. Worshipful Knox is making progress with his health, and we are just so glad to see him out and about.

See you all in Lodge.

Robert W. Leach

FROM THE WEST – THE PILLAR OF STRENGTH

Greetings Brethren.

By now, you should have received the Master’s Summons to attend our 2023 Roll Call Dinner.  It is our annual event in which we honor our brothers who have laid down their working tools.  Please set aside some time to attend this event, and join the Master as we pay tribute to those who have gone before us.

As we continue to look for opportunities to fellowship outside of our monthly stated meetings, the Master has tasked me with organizing a Lodge camping trip.  The goal of this initial trip, is to find a suitable location not far from Sacramento, so that we can assess interest in such events.

After doing some research on facilities with accommodations for those who like to Glamp, tent camp, or drive and/or pull their house on wheels, I believed the Inn Town Campground in Nevada City has the best facilities, at reasonable prices, for such an event.  Check out their website at https://inntowncampground.com.  I’m looking for an August or September time frame for such an event, and if you we like to participate, please reach out to me at my email address listed below.

Finally, I would like to take the opportunity to thank all who have participated this year in putting together our Stated Meeting Dinners.  In addition to Kevin Laybourn stepping up last month, Tony Shelton, Tim Scott, Robert Leach and Jim Lloyd have also served the Lodge in this manner.  Though I may have missed mentioning others who deserve credit, please know that Robert and I are grateful for your service to the Lodge members and their families.

Fraternally,

Kelly Dixon, PM

FROM THE SECRETARY’S DESK

Hello Brethren,

So, this is all you need to know on the Grand Lodge of California:

The Grand Lodge of California was established in the year1850, here in Sacramento.  This was just a few months before California became a state.  As history shows us, Sutter’s Fort was established in 1839, and called New Helvetia (or new Switzerland).  It was quickly established as a Mining Supply, Agricultural and Trade Colony.  Miners began to arrive on their quest for gold, and several carried military-issued charters.  This was for Masonic meetings to be held in the field.

Shortly after arriving at Sutter’s Fort, some decided to stay, and then built Masonic Lodges in Sacramento.  After a time, the Grand Lodge of California was relocated for a while, to sleepy river town of Courtland.  Now, it resides at 1111 California Street in San Francisco, California.

Interesting to note, that when the Lodge in Courtland closed, a deal was made with a buyer to have the ornate stained glass removed and sent to San Francisco.   Here, it was installed within our Grand Lodge in San Francisco.  A reminder of our rich past and devotion to move forward in life, with the pursuit of history of Freemasonry in California.

Respectfully Submitted,

Tony L. Shelton, PM

Secretary

FROM THE EAST – THE PILLAR OF WISDOM

Brethren,

I for one, am happy that Spring is around the corner.  By the time you read this, it will finally be here.  Hopefully this finds you with warmer weather, but I have a feeling it is still going to be cold and rainy for a while.

This last month, the Lodge was able to help provide support to our local Job’s Daughters Bethel 291.  Their Bethel Advisor, Linda Dunzweiler, had asked me to place a jar of sorts at the Lodge.  This was to hopefully promote their scholarship fundraiser for this year.  We had only anticipated getting $100.00 from it, especially if people donated dimes and filled it up.  But Brethren, let me tell you this, Capital City Lodge took the charge and by the end of our Stated Meeting, we had donated over $120.00.  There did end up being more, but I can’t recall the exact amount.  This is truly how masons should act, when promoting education.  I would like to thank all you brothers who donated.

In addition, this last month our Lodge has helped to provide the Job’s Daughters with a prospect party, to help drive their membership.  We also provided food for this occasion, and a place for them to have the party.  I truly hope we can continue to support them in their growth and endeavors.

Hopefully, you were able to join us at the end of March for Brother Bryan Lincoln’s 2nd degree.  The Lodge officers have been working hard to put this together, and brush up on the ritual.  As, my brothers, it’s been some time since we have seen a 2nd degree.  We have a few new initiates, EA’s and several potential prospects out there.

I encourage everyone who has engaged a prospect with our Lodge, to continue to follow up.  Invite them to our monthly breakfast, and/or Stated Meeting Dinner. Remember, any fun activities are reasons to bring a friend and potential prospective member.

Brother Tim Scott will be having his Hiram Award presentation on April 22nd, and would like to invite all the brothers that can attend.  Please see the event date for website to RSVP with Harding San Juan Lodge, who is putting on the Ceremony and Dinner to follow.  The dinner plan is a “Low Country Boil”, with Key Lime Pie.  More information is available at hardingsanjuan.com.  You will need to RSVP by 4/19/23, and the cost for dinner is $15.00 per person.

Lastly, I would like to let everyone know about our upcoming plans for the “Roll Call Dinner” in May.  Invitations will be mailed out soon, so please make plans to attend.  Brother Tim Scott will be there to prepare another fine meal too, as we honor our fallen brothers who have passed to the “Celestial Lodge” above.

Fraternally,

Robert W. Leach

FROM THE SECRETARY’S DESK

Greetings Brethren.

Do you know the difference between Free and Accepted Masons and Ancient Free and accepted Masons? Let me help you better understand.

From 1751 to 1813, there were two Grand Lodges in England.  Both issued warrants for degrees, as well as charters to allow formation within the new colonies, soon to be known as the United States.  The main difference between these two Grand Lodges, was the disagreement on their written constitutions.  The group “Brother English Masons” were then dubbed the (Moderns).  Ironically, this group was actually the older British Grand Lodge. The second group were the “English Freemasons”, and called themselves the Antient’s or Ancient’s.  Therefore, the moderns were known as Free and Accepted Masons, and the Antient’s established the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons.

This agreement only lasted 62 years, when both groups agreed to open formal Masonic Communications.  In 1813, all things passed and the two Grand Lodges merged back together as the Grand Lodge of England. Then later in 1813, they merged with the Premier Grand Lodge of England, and the Ancient Grand Lodge of England to create the United Grand Lodge of England.

With all of this behind them, the damage was done in the new colonies, as both Ancient and Free and Accepted Lodges were established all across the new country.  There is a once-a-year meeting called a cave degree, where brothers can meet and view degree work from other states.  At this time, you can experience these differences in the degree work at opening and closing.

Today, all of the Grand Lodges in the United States treat each other with respect to all.  Many of the Grand Lodges in Scotland, England, Thailand, Ireland, India, as well as others in Europe, Africa and South America all observe our united front.

So remember, out of Masonic teachings, that Time, Patients and Perseverance, can allow us to accomplish all things.

Tony L. Shelton, PM

FROM THE EAST – THE PILLAR OF WISDOM

Brethren,

Well, we had a fairly busy start to the new masonic year in February.  It was a very successful first Saturday Breakfast, followed by our annual Sweethearts and Ladies Luncheon.  The ladies left the luncheon with a wonderful Capital City Lodge gift of an engraved sweetheart’s glass and some chocolates.

During the day, we learned a lot about the Masonic Homes from a presentation by a Masonic Homes representative.  We received information about the great benefits that each Mason has access to, by just being a part of this great fraternity.  My brothers, it is so important that each Mason knows about these benefits, as well as a great resource at www.masonichome.org.  Here they will explain all the benefits and resources available.

Next, the Super Bowl Party this year was a big hit.  We had a great crowd, with members from other lodges in our very own district, which included Harding San Juan & Rio Linda.  I’m hoping brothers, that as we continue this event, it may grow into more of a district event.  It was also amazing to try the variety of different foods and snacks, that we all got to share.  Even the beverages were good too.

The Month of March is our Youth Order observance, and we plan to help sponsor a Prospect Party for our Local Job’s Daughter’s Bethel number 291.  These girls have worked so hard, and like all youth orders, are struggling with membership.  Please reach out if you know of any young girls or ladies, who you think would benefit from membership in Job’s daughters.  Once again brethren, please remember the Masonic youth orders.  Job’s Daughter, DeMolay and Rainbow for Girls are our future in Masonry.  I am not sure yet on the date in March, but the officers of the Lodge will be helping them make this a success.

Last, but certainly not least, the Lodge was very fortunate to have a successful double First Degree in the Month of February.  I would like to welcome Brothers Chris Love and Daniel Marrujo to our fraternity.  I would also like to extend a thank you to the brothers from Harding-San Juan & Rio Linda Lodges for helping us out.  We really appreciate their efforts, and Brother’s Love and Marrujo bring an excitement to masonry that has been unseen in a long time.

I would like to end by encouraging everyone to try and make the March Stated Meeting.  Not only to meet the new brothers, but also because we are having “Corned Beef and Cabbage” for dinner!

FROM THE WEST – THE PILLAR OF STRENGTH

Greetings Brethren.

Let me first welcome Brothers Chris Love and Dan Marrujo, to the fraternity.  Capital City Lodge is certainly a better place with the two of them as members.  I was honored to be a part of their initiation, and look forward to being a apart of their Masonic journey.

In addition to the double first degree, the Lodge had our Sweethearts and Ladies Luncheon, a monthly breakfast, and a Superbowl party all in the month of February.  To everyone who help put on these events, thank you for your assistance.  A special thanks goes out to Brother Tony Shelton for arranging a Masonic Services Bureau presentation, at the Sweethearts and Ladies Luncheon.

I’m looking forward to our March Stated Meeting meal of corned beef and cabbage.  I think the version I prepared last year fell a little short of the mark, and I’m sure this year’s version will be something to savor.  Also in the month of March, we will be having a Second-Degree Ceremony, passing Brother Bryan Lincoln to the degree of Fellowcraft.

Finally, we will be participating with our Job’s Daughter’s Bethel, as they put on a prospect party.  When the date is finalized, Worshipful Leach will put out the information.  So, when the date is identified, and if it meets with some of your free time, please consider helping support Job’s Daughters in their endeavors to increase membership.

FROM THE SECRETARY’S DESK

Greetings Brethren.

It is now March, and we have a traditional observance from Ireland.

Did you know that in London,

a Lodge was meeting holding their meeting in a Library.  Part of this Library was under repair, and a young girl named Elizabeth St. Leger was currently napping there.

She was suddenly awakened, after hearing voices behind the wall.  Upon removing two bricks, she was able to view some men doing a ritual, and was able to observe a ceremony taking place from behind the wall.

A sudden noise from without the room, alarmed the Tyler of the Lodge.  When he went to investigate it, he found a young girl.  But it just so happens, that he is the butler of her home.  Among the men who came out to see about the alarm was her father, and he was also a mason of this Lodge.

Since she under stood the solemnity of this event, it was agreed by all the men present, to make her a mason. It is also believed that she was initiated sometime between 1710 and 1718.  Elizabeth was married in 1713, and continued to attend Lodge with her husband.  She lived from 1693 until 1773, when she finally passed away.  Elizabeth was never the Master of the Lodge, but was an active member until she passed away.  To date, her picture still hangs in the Lodges of Ireland, with the caption below reading “The First Lady of Masonry”.

And now, you know the rest of the story!
