FROM THE EAST – THE PILLAR OF WISDOM
Brethren,
As we move into the summer months, I can image many of you will be traveling for vacation. I hope that wherever your travels take you, they are filled with fond and lasting memories & bring you back home safely. For those of you who are staying around town, Robert, Ed and I will continue to plan for Lodge fellowship opportunities.
On May 13th, I attended an outing at the Country Club Lanes with several other brothers. Our Senior Warden put it together, and it was a great opportunity to enjoy the company of brothers away from the Lodge. Thanks for your efforts, Robert. I had a great time.
We will be having a “Hawaiian Night” at the Lodge in June. Brother Ed will provide more details about this event in his article. I hope to see you all there.

FROM THE WEST – THE PILLAR OF STRENGTH
Brethren,
As we close out May and move into June, the beginning of Summer is upon us. Such a great time of year to enjoy the good weather and be outdoors. I say this to encourage you to get out and participate not only in your family endeavors, but with your Lodge as well. This last month of May, we had a great turn out for Bowling. It was a night of fellowship, and good times were had by all. As Worshipful Dixon mentioned, we will continue to plan for more fellowship opportunities in the future. We are open to any ideas that the brethren may have, so please come forward and show your interest in a new idea for the Lodge.
I hope to see everyone at the Lodge Breakfast again this month. The first Saturday of this Month is June 4th, and it will be at the usual time of 8:00 am to 10:00 am. The kitchen crew will have a new griddle on display, all fixed up and in working order for fresh, hot pancakes. A great big thanks goes out to Worshipful Eric Schlenker, for donating a wonderful camping stove to the Lodge. We have taken the opportunity to purchase a large griddle for it, and have plans to use it for Lodge breakfasts & possibly a Lodge camping trip or outing this summer. More information to come in the following months.
Also, I believe this month we are having a “Hawaiian Night” at the Lodge. More details to follow from Worshipful Ed our Junior Warden. I encourage the brothers and their families to wear their Hawaiian shirts for the event. Looking forward to seeing you all there.

FROM THE SOUTH – THE PILLAR OF BEAUTY
Greetings Brethren.
We are in the 6th month of this year and indeed, time travels unbelievably fast. For this month’s article, I would like to talk about Masons being travelers, and share a story with you.
I AM A MASON,,,, A TRAVELLER
One time, I went to the store and saw a man standing in front of the cashier. I couldn’t help but notice the big square and compass ring on his right ring finger. So I asked him, “Are you a traveler, brother”? He replied, “No, I live locally. I’m from Sacramento”. Not quite the response I was waiting or hoping for, and I was a little disappointed and frustrated. I’m not sure if it was the fact that he doesn’t have any clue what I’m talking about, or the misrepresentation of the symbol of square and compass he was wearing. I decided to prod him a little more and said “I can’t help but notice the ring on your finger”. He replied, “Oh, I see now. I know what you mean”. He then proceeded to tell me what lodge he belonged to. Surprisingly, we did have common acquaintances. He went on to apologize, and said I had caught him off guard.
Why do we call ourselves travelers? And why is it important to travel? As we recall in our historical lecture, operative masonry is the builders of the temple or cathedral. Their skill set is very special in that they can go to other countries, if there is work to be done. This particular profession was so in-demand, that they are allowed to travel and work in foreign countries. As they travel, they gain new knowledge & skills that they can apply, and then add to the quality of their work.
In speculative masonry, our travels may not mean traveling to foreign countries, but gaining admission to other lodges. It also establishes relations with the deeper meaning of brotherly, love, relief and truth. By our travels, we gain a deeper meaning of our craft, and in doing so, we increase our knowledge in the workings of our fraternity. In my travels, I was able to observe practices that even though have some similarity to our rituals, they have subtle differences as well. I was able to experience first-hand, the wages of a mason as I labored with my other brethren in the fraternity. I cannot help to compare how different the cultures are, while practicing and memorizing the same words, but the translation and implementation seem to have branched out in a different meaning. The heated argument, and verbal battle inside the lodge during the stated meeting, was one I wasn’t expecting to observe. It was like a theatrical scene unfolding in front of me, nothing I have seen before. But I was also a witness of reconciliation and acceptance of one’s beliefs, respect of others opinion and the love of a brother towards another after a debacle. It is quite a scene. The practice of the tenets of masonry in pure form, I would say.
For month of June, our Lodge will be sponsoring a “Hawaiian Night” event. This will be a relaxed, informal event, that the members of our Lodge, their family & friends will surely enjoy. It’s time for all of you to take that best “Hawaiian Costume” out of the closet. Let’s have a memorable day with our brothers, family and friends, including lots of fun. This is a combination of an outdoor and indoor function, as we are trying to showcase what our Lodge has to offer in terms of event functionality.
May we continue to travel, and find ways to improve ourselves, so that may we become a beacon of light & hope to this generation and the next.
